The Fence is coming to Durham.

What is THE FENCE?

Click! is proud to partner with the City of Durham's Public Art Committee and Photoville to present THE FENCE in Durham. THE FENCE is the largest photography public art exhibit in the world is coming to Durham August - November 2017.

It’s an amazing opportunity to have our work seen in person by 4 million people plus a top cadre of Triangle Region Jurors, and also to win a bunch of great awards and prizes (see below).

The FENCE is an opportunity for photographers of all levels to have their work featured on a high quality outdoor photography exhibition, on display in seven cities across the USA. 

The exhibition will be on display outdoors in high foot and bike traffic public spaces in Brooklyn (NY), Boston (MA), Atlanta (GA), Houston (TX), Santa Fe (NM), Durham (NC), and Denver (CO).

Your work will stay up in each city for several months, allowing the public ample space to enjoy and engage with it.

Photographers of all levels are invited to submit work that explores the following themes: Creatures, Home, Nature, People, Play, Streets and Food. You may submit multiple series to one or more categories.

Featured photographers hail from many countries, bringing visual narratives from all around the globe.

A jury of 50+ photo professionals will review all submissions. 

40 photographers will be selected for The FENCE 2017 to appear in all seven cities. 

10 more photographers will be chosen from the Triangle Region to appear on the Durham


Our 2017 jurors are an international and diverse mix of the industry representing the New Museum, New Yorker Magazine, Refinery29, New York Times, Open Society Foundations, NOOR, Seoul Lunar Festival, Lagos Photo Festival, ESPN, and so many more. The full jury list is here.
One photographer will receive the Juror's Choice grand prize, a solo exhibition at Photoville 2017 and a $5K cash grant (plus project consultancy and production support).
Another photographer will receive the People's Choice prize, a Leica camera package and access to a master class of their choice through the Leica Akademie.
Submitting artists who live or work in the Triangle Region of Durham, Raleigh, or Chapel Hill and neighboring North Carolina counties will automatically be entered in the jurored print exhibition of the CLICK! Triangle Photography Festival. Regional winners will be: included in projection events during the Click! festival and be invited to a panel discussion of their work and a reception at the Durham Arts Council; entered in a drawing for free one year memberships to regional art organizations (eg, Durham Arts Guild, VAE Raleigh, Nasher Museum, and NC Museum of Art), free sets of fine art photography books from Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies and Daylight Books, portfolio reviews, and more!
