Mary Virginia Swanson is an author, educator and advisor who helps artists find the strength in their work identify appreciative audiences and present their work in an informed, professional manner. During her career she has worked in the fine art, documentary, photojournalism and licensing arenas.
Swanson co-authored with Darius Himes the acclaimed Publish Your Photography Book: Revised & Updated (Princeton Architectural Press, 2014). Swanson is known for staying current in today’s diverse marketplace for photographs. Her current book project is Finding Your Audience: An Introduction to Marketing Your Photographs (2017), a major update to her earlier Business of Photography: Principles and Practices (2011).
Swanson is a respected mentor who has guided countless photographers through the changes taking place in nearly every aspect of our industry, preparing them for new opportunities in today’s photography-rich culture. She is based in Tucson and NYC. www.mvswanson.com, @maryvirginiaswanson.

One of the most exciting recent developments for photographers is the growth of new markets for their work. Whether a fine print is shown in a museum or in a corporate office, reproduced as a book cover illustration or featured in product advertising, the value of that photograph is different for each buyer. In this seminar, Swanson will provide an overview of the opportunities for, and the value of, placing your work within today's diverse photography marketplace. Effective paths introducing your work to new markets will be discussed, as well as the value (or not) of investing in juried competitions and portfolio reviews as a viable way to meet industry professionals that can make a difference in your career.
session 2: Funding models for your long-term project

Many photographers engage in creative projects that live within them for years, continuing work on them as funding allows, while others are intent on finishing a specific project that requires travel or other resources for completion. No matter what the parameters are for growing and concluding your project, securing time and support on many levels is essential. In this seminar, Mary Virginia Swanson will describe the path to successful fundraising to support the completion and subsequent publication & exhibition of your photography projects. She will help artists understand how to conduct effective research and connect with like-minded individuals, organizations and foundations who share a passion for their subject. The types of monetary grants available through corporate & private foundations and government agencies will be discussed, as well as the value of partnering with a fiscal agent for foundation support, in-kind donations, and sponsorship. Throughout the lecture, Ms. Swanson will share resources for fundraising and describe her research methodology to secure financial support for your photography project to reach the broadest possible audience.
